Iran not to compromise on its water rights to Hirmand River: FM

Tehran, IRNA - Iranian Foreign Minister Hossein Amirabdollahian said Iran and Afghanistan have agreed to take “immediate steps” to settle a long-running water dispute, stressing that the Islamic Republic “will not compromise on its water rights” to the Hirmand River.

In a Twitter post on Monday, Amirabdollahian said he had raised the issue at a recent meeting with the Taliban government’s Foreign Minister Amir Khan Mottaqi in the Uzbek city of Samarkand.

“Afghanistan also stressed its commitment to Iran’s water rights,” he added.

Iran and Afghanistan have been locked in a festering water dispute for decades. The two sides signed a water-sharing treaty in 1973, under which Afghanistan pledged to allow the flow of water from Hirmand into Iran.

The agreement has never been fully implemented as Iran’s share of the water has steadily dwindled in recent years due to excessive irrigation and dam construction in Afghanistan.

Hirmand River, also known as Helmand in Afghanistan, originates in the Hindu Kush Mountains near Kabul and flows 700 miles (1,126 kilometers) south before funneling into Hamoun wetlands in the arid Sistan region in southeast Iran.
